Early inland drive, pay the gorge day fee, Kalbarri Skywalk then Nature’s Window (turn back at the arch). Optional Z-Bend lookout if energy remains. No Loop unless the group is cool, early and honest.

This is the default first Kalbarri day. You see Kaju Yatka and Nature’s Window, you stay inside official heat rules, and you still have a coastal sunset in reserve if the gorge cooks.

Caravans stay in town. Fill water before you leave. Verify fees, Skywalk hours and alerts the same morning. November–March: do not start the Loop after 7 am — this plan assumes you skip the Loop.

Success is two inland icons plus enough buffer for town lunch and a reverse clock. Stacking Skywalk photos, the 9 km Loop and a river descent before noon is how heat days go wrong.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Pack, unhitch, set the reverse clock

    Agree out loud: primary = Skywalk + Window (turn back). Optional = Z-Bend lookout only if cool and strong. Loop is off this plan. Fill bottles, screenshot alerts and Skywalk hours, download Emergency+, leave the van in a town bay.

  2. 06:15–06:45

    Water · fuel · alerts · depart Kalbarri

    Fill 2–3 L each even for lookouts. Check Explore Parks WA, alerts and Skywalk hours. Display or plan to buy the inland day pass. If extreme heat or goat-control closures dominate, switch the day to coastal cliffs now.

  3. 07:00–07:20

    Loop/Z-Bend entry station

    Pay official inland vehicle entry or show a valid pass. No caravans beyond town. Do not invent a “coastal ticket” here — this booth is the inland system.

  4. 07:30–09:15

    Kalbarri Skywalk (Kaju Yatka)

    Both platforms, photos, toilets. No separate ticket. If hours are not yet open, reverse the order and do Nature’s Window first — verify live hours. Supervise children. Still a cliff.

  5. 09:30–11:00

    Nature’s Window only

    Park at the Loop carpark. Walk to the Window. Turn around. Do not continue onto the 9 km Loop unless you planned it, you have 3–4 L each, and (Nov–Mar) you started before 7 am — this timetable does not.

  6. 11:15–12:30

    Optional Z-Bend lookout or town lunch

    If the group is still strong and cool, Z-Bend lookout only (not River Trail). Otherwise return to Kalbarri for shade and food. Midday gorge walking is how heat illness happens.

  7. 15:30–17:30

    Coastal cliffs or rest

    Natural Bridge / Island Rock are generally free — stay on the boardwalk because of wave surge. Or rest. Hutt Lagoon pink lake is nearby, not in the park.

Packing

  • 2–3 L water per person (lookouts still have no tap)
  • Wide-brim hat + SPF
  • Sturdy shoes — sandstone and boardwalks
  • Offline maps / power bank
  • Snacks that survive a hot car
  • Cash/card for inland vehicle entry

Parking & access tips

  • Skywalk and Loop carparks fill in school holidays and wildflower season — early is the strategy.
  • Do not park on vegetation if bays are full; switch sites or come back later.
  • Unhitch the van in town. Inland gorge roads ban caravans and trailers.
  • Have Plan B named before you leave town: Meanarra Hill or the coast.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • The full Loop
  • Z-Bend River Trail or Four Ways
  • Any second hard gorge walk after Skywalk photos
  • A tight afternoon tour after a late inland start

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If alerts show inland closures: switch to the coastal plan immediately
  • If Skywalk hours are closed: Window first, or Meanarra / coast
  • If anyone is cooked at the Window: turn around — that is still a complete day
  • If you missed 7 am in Nov–Mar: do not start the Loop as a “quick add-on”
