Z-Bend Lookout

Z-Bend gorge complex · Class 3 lookout walk — uneven sections, cliff edges · About 45–60 minutes return including views · About 600 m one way from the carpark (Explore Parks WA); ~1.2 km return

Explore Parks WA: the Z-Bend lookout overhangs a sharp bend in the Murchison River and is reached via a walk of about 600 m from the parking area. Same inland entry station and day pass as the Loop. Heat, unfenced edges and variable reception still apply.

Do not pair: Do not pair the lookout with Four Ways on a first mixed-group morning. Lookout first; only then decide on a descent.

Turnaround: Lookout-only is a complete visit. Reverse before any river drop if heat, water, or kids are already wrong. Confirm on the sign — gully “shortcuts” are not Plan B.

  • Treating Z-Bend lookout, River Trail and Four Ways as one “Kalbarri walk” decided after you leave the car.
  • A 10 am river descent in summer because you missed the Loop’s 7 am closure.

  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: Almost every inland visit — the overhanging gorge bend without a river descent

Distance, grade, time, open/closed status and heat-closure hours change — always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA (exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au) and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you go. Official guidance commonly recommends hiking in the cooler months (about May–October). The Loop Trail is closed after 7 am from November to March inclusive.

Where you start

Z-Bend carpark (inland gorge road, after Loop/Z-Bend entry station)

Separate signed carpark from the Loop. Same inland fee, same caravan ban, same no-water rule. This is also the start for the River Trail and Four Ways — decide your ambition at the car.

How to get there

  1. Pay at the Loop/Z-Bend entry station (inland day vehicle fee). Unhitch caravans in town.
  2. Follow signs to Z-Bend, not the Loop / Nature’s Window carpark. They are different trailheads.
  3. Fill all water in Kalbarri. No drinking water at the site.
  4. Screenshot alerts offline. Reception is variable in the gorge.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Take the signed lookout path. Stay on the formed trail. The edges are both the view and the risk.
  2. Decide before you leave the car whether anyone is also doing the River Trail or Four Ways. Lookout-only is a complete visit.
  3. Morning light is kinder for heat and photography. Midday in summer is a lookout-only day.
  4. Supervise children at the overhang. Do not step off formed rock for a “better angle.”
  5. If you missed the Loop’s 7 am start, this lookout is the honest substitute — not a river descent at 10 am.

What to expect

This is a short Class 3 lookout, not a wilderness trek. Explore Parks WA puts the walk at about 600 m one way from the carpark. You still get heat, unfenced edges and a view that makes people lean.

It is the inland stop people mean when they want the gorge without repeating Nature’s Window. Same road and entry station, different signed carpark.

Lookout vs river trails — three walks, one carpark

Z-Bend is a complex, not one walk. The lookout is the high-reward short walk. The River Trail drops steeply toward the river (ladders, loose rock). Four Ways (Idinggada Yina) is a longer Class 4 descent to a river junction.

Most first-timers should do the lookout and stop. Heat, water and fitness decide whether anyone continues. There is no shame in the lookout photo.

Heat and communications

Gorge-floor reception is often worse than the rim. On the lookout you may still have a bar; do not count on it once anyone starts a descent.

Carry water even for the short walk. There is no tap. Midday summer heat turns “easy” into a bad idea if you also planned a river trail.

What to pair (and what not to)

Strong pairs: Skywalk or Nature’s Window (not the full Loop) the same cool morning, or a coastal afternoon.

Weak pairs: lookout plus Four Ways plus the Loop. If you already walked the Loop, stop at this lookout and go back to town.

Extra tips

  • A good swap if you miss the Loop’s 7 am start.
  • Combine with Skywalk more easily than with the full Loop.
  • Supervise children — overhanging views.
  • Do the lookout first; only then decide on a descent.

Often paired with Z-Bend River— only if energy and weather allow.
