Z-Bend River Trail
Z-Bend gorge complex · Class 4 — steep descents, loose rock, ladder sections to the river · About 2 hours — allow more in heat or with photography · About 2.6 km return (commonly published; [VERIFY] on Explore Parks WA / TrailsWA)
Guide updated · verify track status with Explore Parks WA / DBCA
Steep Class 4 descent from the Z-Bend precinct toward the Murchison, with loose rock and ladder climbs. Same heat, water and early-start discipline as the Loop. Not a casual add-on after a missed 7 am Loop start in summer.
- Class 4 — steep descents, loose rock, ladder sections to the river
- About 2 hours — allow more in heat or with photography
- About 2.6 km return (commonly published; [VERIFY] on Explore Parks WA / TrailsWA)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: Fit walkers who want river-level sandstone after the lookout — cooler months
Distance, grade, time, open/closed status and heat-closure hours change — always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA (exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au) and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you go. Official guidance commonly recommends hiking in the cooler months (about May–October). The Loop Trail is closed after 7 am from November to March inclusive.

Where you start
Z-Bend carpark — signed River Trail (not only the lookout path)
Starts from the same inland Z-Bend carpark. Inland day pass required. Decide lookout-only vs river before you commit downhill — you still have to climb back out.
How to get there
- Same inland entry station and caravan rule as the Loop. Pay or display a valid pass.
- Follow signs to the Z-Bend carpark, then the River Trail — not only the lookout path.
- No water on trail. Carry Loop-like volumes if the day is warm.
- Tell someone in town. PLB recommended. Reception is poor in the gorge floor.
How to do it (step by step)
- Do the lookout first if you want the overview, then commit to the river only if the group is still strong and cool.
- Use three points of contact on ladders and loose rock. Hands free for balance — phone in a pocket.
- Turn around while you still have water for the climb-out. River time is not free; gravity collects on the way up.
- Same Nov–March heat logic as the Loop even if a 7 am closure is not posted on this trail — [VERIFY] live restrictions. Do not start a river descent in extreme heat.
- The Murchison is not a swimming-hole plan. After rain or in high flow, treat the floor as closed to you.
What to expect
This is not the lookout path. You lose height quickly on uneven rock. Ladders and loose sections are normal. The reward is river-level banded sandstone — and a climb you must still have water for.
If anyone is unsure at the first steep section, reverse. The lookout already delivered the Z-Bend story.
Who it suits
Fit walkers comfortable with Class 4 ground, heat and a mandatory climb-out. Not a first Kalbarri walk, not a family stroll, and not a loophole around the Loop’s 7 am summer closure.
If you missed the Loop start, do the Z-Bend lookout. Starting this descent at 10 am in November is how groups run out of water on the ladders.
Logistics and reverse
Out-and-back from the Z-Bend carpark. No river pickup. No shade worth planning on. Carry 1 L per person per hour (official gorge guidance) and start early.
Reverse is the same steep ground. Groups that linger at the river in rising heat pay for it on the ladders.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pair: the Z-Bend lookout first, then this trail only if the group is still strong. Town lunch after. Skywalk on a different cool start.
Weak pair: Four Ways the same day, or the full Loop then this. One gorge-floor walk is enough.

Extra tips
- Cooler months (May–October) only for most visitors.
- Don’t add this after the full Loop the same day.
- Sturdy shoes — sandals fail on ladders.
- Agree a turnaround time before the first ladder.
Often paired with Z-Bend Lookout— only if energy and weather allow.
