Loop-focus morning

One serious gorge morning + recovery · Best for: Fit walkers treating the 9 km Loop as the day’s only hard objective

Early-start Loop with a clear turnaround at Nature’s Window. Skip Skywalk photos first. Recover in town afterwards. Nov–Mar: on trail before 7 am or don’t start.

If the Loop is the day’s walk, don’t spend 90 minutes on Skywalk photos first. The Window is where you decide whether to continue, not a picnic stop.

Official: 9 km, 3–5 hours, Class 4, 50 °C gorge potential, 1 L/hour, closed after 7 am November–March.

You finish at the same carpark. There is no shuttle and no useful bail-out once you leave the Window. Reverse from the arch is easy. Reverse from halfway is still the Loop.

Verify Explore Parks WA and alerts the morning you go. Extra closures happen in extreme heat and during goat control.

Track status, heat-closure hours and weather change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Pack 3–4 L each · tell someone · check 7 am rule

PLB charged. Emergency+ installed. Shoes, hat, electrolytes. Screenshot alerts. Agree: Window is the decision gate. If anyone is already unsure, this is not tomorrow’s walk.

  2. Pre-dawn / very early

    Drive · pay · walk

Nov–Mar you must be starting before 7 am. Cooler months still start early. Unhitch in town. Pay inland vehicle entry. No dogs. No water at the carpark.

  3. At the Window

Decision gate — continue or reverse

Turn around if anyone is struggling, quiet, dizzy, or already down on water. Climbing the arch is not allowed. The photo is enough.

  4. 3–5 hours

Full Loop or reverse from Window

No intermediate exits once committed. Cliff edges then gorge floor, rocky and sandy, little shade. Climb-out is the crux. Return with water in reserve.

  5. Afternoon

Town shade — no second hard walk

Coastal boardwalk optional. Skywalk only if the group is genuinely fresh — usually they are not. Do not add Z-Bend River because “we’re already inland.”

Packing

  • 3–4 L water + electrolytes
  • PLB / sat messenger
  • Headlamp for pre-dawn starts
  • Wide-brim hat + UPF shirt
  • Sturdy shoes — not sandals
  • Simple first-aid / blister kit

Parking & access tips

  • Loop carpark only — you finish where you start.
  • No second vehicle needed.
  • If bays are full, do not invent parking. Window-only later, or Skywalk, or abort.
  • Unhitch the van in town before this road.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Skywalk first
  • Z-Bend River after the Loop
  • Four Ways the same day
  • A tight afternoon tour
  • Starting after 7 am November–March

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers who already decided the Loop is the day’s only hard walk
  • Cool-season visitors, or summer groups who will actually start before 7 am
  • People carrying Loop-like water and a PLB
  • Not first-timers who have not seen the Window yet

Turnaround rules

  • Anyone dizzy, overheated or unusually quiet at the Window → turn around
  • Water already half gone before the gorge floor → turn around
  • Missed 7 am in Nov–Mar → Window only or go home
  • Do not invent a gully shortcut

What success looks like

  • Either a completed Loop with water left for the climb-out, or an honest reverse at the Window
  • Someone in town knew your return time
  • No second gorge-floor walk
  • Town shade counts as the afternoon plan
